In order to drive a vehicle, every person has to hold a valid licence. A driving licence not only gives its holder a competence certificate but also responsibility regarding driving skills and road rules. Learner's licence is issued under Rule 10 of CMV Rules, 1989, by the Motor Vehicles Authority. The licence is valid only for 6 months.
Types of Learner's Licence in Madhya Pradesh
A learner's licence allows an individual to learn driving either a two-, three-, or four-wheeler. For commercial vehicles, the individual will have to enroll at a motor driving school to learn professional driving. In order to be eligible for a learner's licence, the applicant should be at least 16 years old (for private vehicle) or 20 years old (for commercial vehicles).
Non Transport Vehicle: The applicant, aged 16, is given learner's licence for 60 cc non geared motorcycle. In case of light motor vehicles or motor cycle with gear, the applicant should be 18 years old. A declaration form, submitted by the applicant's parents, is mandatory. If the applicant is 50 years old, then he will be required to submit the CMV-Form 1 certified by a medical practitioner.
Transport Vehicle: Applicant's opting for commercial or transport vehicle learner's licence should be 20 years old. A one year experience of driving a light motor vehicle is a prerequisite. The applicant should also produce a CMV-Form 1A, with a medical practitioner's sign.
How to Apply for Learner's Licence in Madhya Pradesh
The Road Transport Department in Madhya Pradesh is responsible for issuing learner's licence. The licence can be applied through two means - online and in person. The fees charged for the licence is Rs 30 for each category of vehicle.
The applicant can visit the nearest RTO and fill in the required forms and submit the documents. Once the documents are verified and fees deposited, the applicant will be called to give a preliminary test. If the applicant passes the test, learner's licence will be issued. In case of failure, the applicant will be asked to come a week later to appear for the theory test.
